It might not be at the Kentucky Derby, as most would hope. Though owner Paul Pompa did rule out a run in the Run for the Roses for D Funnybone, he did seem to think the Preakness Stakes could make more sense.
If everything goes right (in the Swale) the plan right now is the Withers (April 24 at Aqueduct) and the Preakness. (The Preakness) is a little shorter than the Derby and the tight turns at Pimlico are more conducive to his style.Â
Everything did go very right at the Swale for DFunnybone. The colt took command after the opening quarter and opened a big lead. He was urged on late to turn back a strong comeback bid from Ibboyee and crossed the finish line clear by 1¼ lengths.
D Funnybone covered the seven-furlong trip in 1:21.98 on a track rated as fast to remain perfect in two starts this season. He has now won three Grade 2 sprint stakes races, put Pompa again insisted that the Kentucky Derby might not be in his plans.
“My main goal is to make him a stallion,” Pompa said. “We do have the Preakness in our sights, but we don’t want to ask him to do something he might not be capable of doing. We’re not going to the Derby.”
D’ Funnybones only bad race of his career came when trying two turns and a synthetic track in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last November.
