Yankees still in winning streak
Just one month away from the regular season games, the New York Yankees hold on tight to their winning streak while the St. Louis Cardenals bit the dust again.
The team owes their Monday victory 11-5 over the Oakland Athletics to the home runs of Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano and Marcus Thames. Along with the Tampa Bay Rays who outblued the Toronto Blue Jays 6-2, the Yankees top the East Division.
Teixeira and Cano made their home runs in the third inning, while Thames made it in the fifth, settling the score.
The defending World Series champions are focused on seizing control of their division and giving themselves the best possible chance to advance through October and back to the familiar turf of the winner’s circle.
“The division is very important,” said New York manager Joe Girardi. “I would love to have the home-field advantage, but you can’t do that at the risk of injuring someone. That’s the one thing that you have to avoid during this.”
Never before have two baseball teams been tied for first place this many days in a row, this late in a season. The old record, apparently, belonged to the Dodgers and Astros, who were locked up atop the NL West for seven straight days in July in 1980.
