Like the end of times had come, thousands of teddy bears and other stuffed animals were thrown by Hockey fans into the rink at the Calgary Hitmen game last week against the Red Deer Rebels. It was all started by the Hitmen, who organized the plush-tossing event to benefit charities in Alberta that work with children. The players of the team hand-delivered the plushies to the children in Alberta Children’s Hospital the day after the game. The fans brought the plushies to the game and when the first goal was scored, the 16,000 fans at the Scotiabank Saddledome took their stuffed animals and tossed them as far as they could into the hockey rink. Some plushies had to be picked up again and thrown to get to the rink. It’s not the first time teddy bears are tossed like this. Actu... more

After a dreadful start of ten games lost in a row, the New York Islanders decided to blame it on their coach, Scott Gordon, for their less-than-ideal results. On Monday, the team fired Gordon and named Jack Capuano as the new coach for the rest of the season. Capuano has been the head coach for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers for the past four seasons. The Islanders will make their debut with their new coach Wednesday when the team faces the Tampa Bay Lightning at New York. Islanders’ General Manager Garth Snow said he believes the team needs a change of direction. With the season just starting, it is still a good time for changes and Snow thinks the Islanders have a good shot to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs. Gordon will stay with the team as an advisor to Snow. “Scott has... more

Winger Darcy Tucker has retired after 14 seasons with the NHL. He was an unrestricted free agent this summer and unable to catch on with a new club. "I know if I would have waited and hung around a bit longer I would have got something eventually but I don't think it would have really piqued my interest too much," Tucker said. The 35-year-old forward had 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists) in 71 games with the Colorado Avalanche last season and seeks to start a career as a sports agent.
